Justification
The enrollment in the ESL Center has increased 23% over the last two years. Moreover, attendance during the evening hours is up over 25%, so it is crucial that we have enough qualified support staff (IAs) to correct advanced-level workbooks, facilitate multi-media sessions, and grade tests, things student help cannot do. So much of the success of the ESL Center is due to high student/staff contact, timely feedback and correction, and attendance in our speaking and multimedia courses. Each evening section has an instructor, but there are no permanent IA hours for the evening. We attempt to find/hire classified temporary IAs, yet it is difficult to provide the consistency needed for the evening sections and offer evening students the same array of modules and activities to earn credit.
