Outcomes Addressing Strengths
with Resources

2025 - 2026

Discipline: English as a Second Language

Outcome: Accelerated learning and CTE-specific-instruction
Status: In Progress Est. Completion: Ongoing Increase student use of language program acceleration and supplementation materials and CTE-specific modules currently in use in the ESL Center; create, compile and expand additional materials to strengthen the academic and career and technical skills of ESL Center students.

Outcome: ESL Newsletter
Status: No Longer Applicable Est. Completion: Ongoing Promote ESL students' active use of English by continuing to produce a newsletter every few weeks by and for ESL students featuring student writing and useful information. We will need FTE for a course connected to newsletter contributions.
Resource: Student Help Status: No Longer Needed
Location: LRC/campus area Work Hours: 20

Justification: To maintain the regular publication of our newsletter, The Parrot, we need some paid student time as an incentive for newsletter editors and for a student tutor to assist in the lab portion of ESL 311.

Status Description:

Outcome: ESL Parrot Newsletter
Status: In Progress Est. Completion: Ongoing Provide vehicle for student writing that reflects the diversity of our ESL population to be published and disseminated to ESL and non-ESL students on campus as well as the surrounding communities.
Resource: Equipment Status: No Longer Needed
Equipment Type: Software
New: 20 Replacement:

Description: Appropriate software for ESL Parrot Newsletter course (if offered).

Justification: Students need to learn about and utilize publishing software as part of the ESL Parrot Newsletter course.

Status Description:
Resource: Equipment Status: No Longer Needed
Equipment Type: Laptop
New: 1 Replacement: 0

Description: We are requesting an HP Z Book mobile workstation.

Justification: The professors and students working on the publication of The ESL Parrot Newsletter do not always have access to the computer currently assigned to The Parrot because it is located in a conference room used by all of Humanities. The purchase of a laptop would allow students and professors to continue working on The Parrot even when the conference room is in use.

Status Description:
Resource: Equipment Status: No Longer Needed
Equipment Type: Desktop Computer
New: 1 Replacement: 0

Description: We are requesting one HP Elite Desktop 800 with display monitor.

Justification: The professors and students working on The ESL Parrot Newsletter need another workstation to facilitate the publication of the newsletter. There is currently only one workstation assigned to The Parrot, but it's located in a conference room that is used by all of Humanities. An additional desktop computer could be located in a different room to allow two students to work at the same time and/or to allow one student to continue working while the conference room is being used for other purposes.

Status Description:
Resource: Laboratory Space Status: No Longer Needed
Lab Type: Computer Lab
Seats: 30
Hours/Week: 5
Time of day needed: Morning Afternoon

Justification: A computer-equipped classroom or lab is required to teach the ESL 311 Newsletter Course currently in the catalog and scheduled to be taught in Fall 2012.

Status Description: None received yet, and we do not expect to be able to offer the course in the foreseeable future due to a lack of FTE.
Resource: Student Help Status: Still Need
Location: Humanities Division Work Hours: 20

Justification: We need annual student help dollars to support the publication of the ESL Newsletter - The Parrot. The students will write, edit, lay out, and produce The Parrot (5-6 editions per semester). The students will also distribute The Parrot across the ARC campus and centers.

Status Description:

Outcome: Evening IA Support in the ESL Center
Status: New Est. Completion: Fall 2018 Based upon expanding enrollment and greater use of the ESL Center during evening sections, we are requesting a 27-hour permanent evening IA position in the Center. In order to offer students attending in the evening the same opportunities to earn credit as students who attend during peak hours, we must have qualified workers to run the multi-media sessions, grade advanced level workbooks, and score tests (tasks for instructors and IAs) as well as monitor students in the general study area.
Resource: New Classified Staff Status: New
Classified Type: Instructional Assistant
Work Hours: 27 Work Year: 9 - Month Start Year: 2018-2019

Justification: The enrollment in the ESL Center has increased 23% over the last two years. Moreover, attendance during the evening hours is up over 25%, so it is crucial that we have enough qualified support staff (IAs) to correct advanced-level workbooks, facilitate multi-media sessions, and grade tests, things student help cannot do. So much of the success of the ESL Center is due to high student/staff contact, timely feedback and correction, and attendance in our speaking and multimedia courses. Each evening section has an instructor, but there are no permanent IA hours for the evening. We attempt to find/hire classified temporary IAs, yet it is difficult to provide the consistency needed for the evening sections and offer evening students the same array of modules and activities to earn credit.

Status Description:

Outcome: Grading standards
Status: Completed Est. Completion: Spring 2010 Develop better articulation for listening/speaking classes.

Outcome: Incorporating Appropriate Classroom Technology
Status: In Progress Est. Completion: Ongoing Increase student success, interest, persistence, and retention through the use of different forms of classroom technology such as clickers, ipads, etc. In addition, any addition/upgrade of technology should include the appropriate changes in wiring or the addition of furnishings that ensure the ease and effectiveness of operating the technology in an efficient and ergonomically sound manner.
Resource: Equipment Status: Still Need
Equipment Type: Furniture
New: 3 Replacement:

Description: Appropriate cabinetry or technology stands to better arrange the current technology installed in D206, D209, and D110.

Justification: In addition to any equipment updates needed in the rooms named, cabinetry or stands that facilitate smoother use of the technology is needed. Needs for each classroom are likely to be slightly different. Assistance from ergonomic specialists/space planners may be required to determine what types of furnishings will be required to make using the technology in these rooms more efficient and ergonomically sound.

Status Description:
Resource: Equipment Status: Received
Equipment Type: Other - Discipline Specific
New: 1 Replacement: 0

Description: We want to install another ceiling-mounted projector and a larger screen in the front of D110. (We have a quote from Gary Lane in IMS for the following: Dukane 8940W 4000 Lumens WXGA Projector, Chief RPA Projector Mount w/Univeral Projector Bracket, Da-Lite Model B w/CSR 109" Diag. 16:10 Formal Matte Whilte, and a C2G 50218 50" SEL VGA Video Cable M/M.)

Justification: The current projector projects onto a rather small screen in one corner of the room. The department would like to install an additional projector and a larger screen above the main whiteboards in the room so that students can see the projected image more clearly and so that professors have the ability to project a document in the corner and use the document camera or project something else at the front of room for the class to work on at the same time. This request supports the college objectives of enhancing student learning and instructional effectiveness.

Status Description: While yet to be installed, the equipment has been ordered as of February 2107
Resource: Equipment Status: Received
Equipment Type: TV/DVD/VCR
New: 2 Replacement:

Description: Two large Smart Tvs

Justification: To support the college objective of enhancing student learning and teaching effectiveness, we hope to install a Smart TV in our conversation and multi-media rooms.

Status Description: Items ordered per specs. and quotes provided by campus IT. Receipt of TVs is due in March or April 2017
Resource: Equipment Status: Still Need
Equipment Type: Software
New: 16 Replacement:

Description: The ESL Center needs to replace old software with up-to-date versions and acquire new titles as appropriate.

Justification: Students taking units in the ESL Center need access to different programs to practice a variety of English skills.

Status Description:
Resource: Equipment Status: Received
Equipment Type: Other - Discipline Specific
New: 40 Replacement: 0

Description: One classroom set of clickers (40 per set) and related materials

Justification: After attending the Innovate 2013 Conference at ARC, the ESL dept. is convinced that incorporating the use of clickers in ESL classrooms will increase student interest and lead to greater participation by all of the students in our classes. The use of clickers will allow professors to regularly poll students during class to check their comprehension and gauge whether or not additional review is required. By posting polling results, professors would also be able to indicate to students whether or not they appear to understand the material. Effective use of clickers could lead to increased student success, persistence, and retention.

Status Description: The Humanities Division purchased 40+ iclickers and two bases and has made them available to all professors in the division.
Resource: Equipment Status: Still Need
Equipment Type: Desktop Computer
New:  Replacement: 21

Description: Eighteen student computers for the ESL Center laboratory and 3 staff computers in the ESL Center need to be replaced.

Justification: Access to up-to-date technology is essential to maximizing the students' acquisition of English skills needed for successful academic and career pursuits. While our computers have had some updates and/or some replacement systems have been "cascaded" to us from other areas, the ESL Center has not received new systems since the opening of the "new" LRC in 2007.

Status Description:
Resource: Equipment Status: Received
Equipment Type: Other - Discipline Specific
New: 1 Replacement:

Description: The ESL Department needs a camcorder and tripod for professors to use during classroom activities.

Justification: Listening and speaking teachers, in particular, would like the ability to record student speeches and activities for instruction, feedback, and grading.

Status Description: Camcorder and tripod purchased as requested.
Resource: Major Maintenance of Existing Space Status: Still Need
Maintenance Type: Other
Location: D206, D209, D110
Portion Completed: No

Description: More ergonomically appropriate and practically arranged access to the technology currently installed in the rooms noted.

Justification: The current arrangement of the computer, ELMO, and other technology in each of these rooms is so awkward that it is physically difficult to use the equipment and maintain contact with the students during classroom lectures and activities. The instructor's back is to the students, and the screen is not readily visible or accessible to be referred to. The classrooms listed serve over 800 students each semester. ESL Courses typically start and end with the maximum number of students allowed in each room. Fighting an unwieldy setup of technology deters from the ability of the professors' ability to communicate efficiently and effectively.

Status Description:

Outcome: Integrate technology
Status: Completed Est. Completion: Ongoing Continue to train faculty in the effective use of SmartBoard technology, InFocus projectors and laptop computers and update technology in classrooms as appropriate.
Resource: Equipment Status: No Longer Needed
Equipment Type: Smart Classroom
New: 1 Replacement: 2

Description: Smart classrooms as determined by IT are needed for Davies Hall 206, 209, 102, Tech/Voc 304,and Portable 601.

Justification: In today's world, teachers need access to technology to improve their teaching, and students need access to technology to improve their learning and increase their job skills. In addition, publishers are increasingly adding on-line resources to accompany their textbooks. Providing Smart classrooms for the diverse ESL population also aligns with ARC goals and objectives to reduce the achievement gap across ethnic and socio-economic groups.

Status Description:

Outcome: Maintain access to effective ESL instruction
Status: In Progress Est. Completion: Ongoing Secure highly qualified faculty replacements, including those with experience with ESL/Basic Skills initiatives, to ensure ESL students retain one of the highest success rates on campus. Recruit and hire classified temporary IAs and Master Tutors as well as student help student help to adequately staff the ESL Center
Resource: Classroom (Lecture) Space Status: Still Need
Seats: 30
Hours/Week: 36
Time of day needed: Morning Afternoon Evening

Justification: The ESL Department has offered courses in Room Tech Ed Room 304 for more than a decade, maintaining high enrollment and retention despite any down times experienced campus-wide. ESL faculty and students are inconvenienced by the distance that separates this classroom from our other classrooms, support services, and office staff.

Status Description:
Resource: Equipment Status: Received
Equipment Type: Other - Discipline Specific
New:  Replacement: 26

Description: We need high-quality whiteboards to replace our current boards which do not erase easily or clearly. The ghosting on our current boards makes it impossible to simply erase with a whiteboard eraser. The professor must stop lecturing and take the time to clean the boards with water/cleaner and dry them before being able to continue with the lecture.

Justification: Obsolescence - the new whiteboards are to replace the old boards whose surfaces have worn out to the point of being practically unusable.

Status Description: The Humanities Division purchased all the boards the department requested, and we are now waiting for them to be installed.
Resource: Equipment Status: Still Need
Equipment Type: Other - Discipline Specific
New:  Replacement: 6

Description: We need to replace older CD players that either do not work well and/or do not have the ability to play MP3 files.

Justification: ESL professors use audio files in a variety of ways to improve instruction and for testing purposes.

Status Description:
Resource: Student Help Status: New
Location: ESL Center Work Hours: 64

Justification: The ESL Center serves nearly 500 students each semester. Open 49.5 hours per week, each hour is staffed with a student tutor (added 30% for peak attendance times) for a total of 64.35 hours each week. Tutor wages will climb to 12.00 during the next fiscal cycle.

Status Description:

Outcome: Maintain ESL Center Coordination FTE
Status: No Longer Applicable Est. Completion: Spring 2011 Since students who have completed any ESL 97 class have an 84% success rate in all courses (not just ESL) on campus, we need to ensure continued coordination FTE to accommodate the projected 15% enrollment load and 20% contact hour increase based on six semesters of data.

Outcome: Maintian access to effective ESL instruction
Status: No Longer Applicable Est. Completion: Ongoing Secure highly quailified faculty replacements to ensure ESL students retain the highest success rates on campus and partner with existing faculty to implement new ESL Certificates.
Resource: New Faculty Status: No Longer Needed
Faculty Type: Instructional Reason: Replacement/Retirement
Work Days: 175 Start Semester: Spring

Justification: In order to maintain access and continue effective language training for nonnative speakers, a replacement and a retirement position are requested. One position accounts for the promotion of Kate Jaques to area dean. In addition, Melinda Wellsfry is retiring in Spring 2012. We have already been informed that two ESL faculty plan to retire at the end of Spring 2014. The ESL department has proven its effectiveness in assisting students to achieve one of the highest success rates on campus, and we don’t want to upset the balance in the department by losing two faculty positions now and losing two additional positions in the near future. In addition, securing highly-qualified faculty to deliver the instruction necessary for students to achieve our new Certificates of Proficiency will assist ARC in meeting its goal of increasing the number of degrees and certificates awarded.
