Students First (2017 - 2021) 1 The College engages and connects students early and often to people, programs, and services as an integrated educational experience. By providing personalized, proactive support, the College fosters relationships that ensure all students, particularly the historically underserved and marginalized, persist, learn, and succeed.

In the spirit of starting right, it is essential for all students to understand how to navigate the college system in order to connect early with the resources and classes they need. This is especially difficult for ESL students who do not yet have the language skills or cultural knowledge to understand even the most basic steps in enrolling and connecting with support services. New ESL students do not have a dedicated space where they can get the information in a language they understand in order to start right.

The solution to this problem is to connect incoming ESL learners with people who speak their language and are able to assist them with the initial steps of becoming a student (application process, assessment, registering, connecting with EOP & S, financial aid, etc.). Additionally, in light of AB 705 and the need to address expediency and completion, it is crucial to connect students early with people who understand their language and can help them find and navigate the shortest path. An ESL Welcome Center could provide a central location to ensure students start right on their way to learning English and completing their goals. A training module developed and piloted by ESL faculty would be used to orient student help to staff a welcome center, providing information and support in a variety of languages to our diverse and growing ESL population.
